Dear Group Leader;
Did you know...
- at one point in the area's history, Scranton was Americas's 37th largest city?
- it was rail manufacturing, not coal mining, that put Scranton on the "map"?
- how Scranton got it's name? The Scranton family, after 7 years of failure, were the first in America to develop the technology to forge railroad tracks. Before that rails were imported from England.
- that 1/6 of the railroad tracks that cross the United States were made here in Scranton?
- the first commercial electric trolly was in Scranton?
- Scranton was called the Electric City because it was one of the first in the world to electrify?
- that Houdini and his brother Hardeen did several historic challenges in our area?
- that Scranton was one of America's major theatrical cities?
- that top stars like Houdini, Will Rogers, Mae West, W.C.Fields, Fred and Adele Astaire, Fanny Brice, Buster Keaton, Jack Benny, The Marx Brothers, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Ray Bolger, John Philip Sousa, Sarah Bernhart, and others came to Scranton at the height of their vaudeville careers? They would go to the top cities in America each week, one of which was Scranton.
- Houdini made five feature films all of which appeared in our area, and that he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry?
- our area was a testing ground for performers to go from here to New York City? The saying was "If you can make it in Scranton, you can make it anywhere!"
These are just a few of the amazing facts about our area that are covered on a tour of the Houdini Museum. A trip to the Houdini Museum is one of the most enjoyable and uplifting trips that you can make. The tour not only entertains and informs, but gives one a feeling of pride and self esteem. There is no more fun filled or positive tour to take. Character traits such as loyalty to family, honesty, a love of books and learning, and a great love of country added to the fact that he was an accomplished athlete who never smoked, drank, or used drugs make him a fantastic role model. Besides being one of the greatest entertainers of all time, he was an innovator, inventor, pioneer aviator, and writer. During World War 1, Houdini taught American soldiers how to escape from handcuffs and took a year off to help the war effort. When he found that deep sea divers were loosing their lives underwater he invented a diving outfit from which one could 'escape' instantly and come to the surface. In addition he exposed frauds and cheats everywhere he went including some in our area.
Our trips are appropriate for all ages. Fun magic shows can be made a part of the trip as well. Souvenirs are available if desired. You can stay a few hours or a full day. Lunch can be arranged. The Houdini Museum is a non profit corporation and has full 501 (C) (3) status from the Treasury Department of the Federal Government. This is one of the most positive, and enjoyable trips involving area history available anywhere.
Discounts for groups of twenty or more. Group leader and bus driver-no charge. Available days, evenings, weekends and holidays by appointment. School groups - one free adult for every 20 youngsters.
Also, plan ahead for a field trip in October. Every year from Columbus Day till Halloween the Houdini Museum sponsors a series of Slightly Scary Magic shows for both groups and individuals. This is a yearly magical stage show as a tribute to our theatrical history and heritage. Reservations required.
